Abstract
Using one-step stochastic production frontier approach, this study estimates the technical efficiency of white-leg shrimp farming and its determinants for households in Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province. Cross-sectional data of one main crop in 2021 is collected from 60 randomly selected households located in 4 communes of Phong Dien district. The results suggest that shrimp yield is significantly affected by the number of feeds followed by the number of seeds and cost of energy and fuel while being negatively impacted by the number of labours. The mean technical efficiency level of white-leg shrimp farmers is 85.4%, suggesting that at the current output level, the shrimp farmers can reduce by 14.6% the total observed inputs. Cultivation method, pond size and diseases have significant effects on farmers’ technical efficiency level while head household characteristics could not explain for technical efficiency variation. Improving farmer awareness and supporting the adoption of muti-stage shrimp farming, small pond size and investment of settling pond and water waste could contribute to further increases in production level.
