Abstract
Community-based tourism is tourism in which local residents play a critical role – an active participant as a producer, owner and decision maker in tourism development. Therefore, it is necessary to study factor affecting the extent of community participation which secure the sustainability of community-based tourism. Using survey data collected from 126 local resident and exploratory factor analysis and regression analysis, this study aims to analyse the extent of local resident participation in tourism development at Quang Loi, and factors stimulating or hindering their participation. Analysis results show that the level of local residents participation is generally low and spontaneous. Four factors significantly impact the extent of community participation, in which “awareness about benefit of community-based tourism” has the strongest positive impact while “awareness about side effects of community-based tourism” has a negative impact. Based on analysis results, some policy implications are proposed to enhance the extent of local resident participation in tourism development.
