Abstract
This study evaluates the variations in Total Factor Productivity (TFP) of commercial banks in Vietnam during the period 2017-2021. By utilizing the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI), it identifies and compares the changes in TFP among 31 commercial banks in Vietnam before and during the COVID-19 era. The findings indicate a decrease in TFP for the banks in the pre-pandemic phase. However, the period of the pandemic witnesses an increased enhancement in TFP for these commercial banks in Vietnam. Technical progress contributes significantly to these TFP shifts. Furthermore, the research confirms the absence of significant differences in TFP changes among different groups of banks: state-owned banks versus other banks, and Post- M & A (Merge and acquisition) banks versus none M&A ones.
